Murder convict becomes lawyer!Rapid Action Battalion yesterday arrested a fugitive sentenced in 1997 to life imprisonment in a murder case who has been practising as a lawyer at Dhaka Judge’s Court for the last 14 years.The Rab-4 arrested Mohammad Sirajul Islam alias Siraj Matbar on the court premises yesterday afternoon.
In Rab custody Siraj said he fled to the capital from his Charchakandi village of Palong upazila in Shariatpur district soon after the killing took place on March 27, 1990 in the village.
Major Khandakar Golam Sarwar of Rab-4 told The Daily Star that acting on a tip-off a Rab team led by DAD Selim Reza arrested Siraj around 2:30pm on the street in front of Dhaka Judge’s Court when Siraj was leaving the court for his residence.
Siraj had been arrested following the murder of farmer Mojammel in a clash between two groups of villagers over selection of candidate for Union Parishad chairman. Siraj got out on bail after eight months in jail.
A Shariatpur court awarded him life term in September 1997 for the murder. Siraj appealed with the High Court against the verdict, but the HC upheld the trial court’s verdict on May 25, 2005, Siraj said.
“Coming out on bail, I fled to the capital, studied law and started practising at Dhaka Judge’s Court and also became a member of Dhaka Bar in 1996. After the High Court upheld the verdict in 2005, I did not surrender,” Siraj told The Daily Star.
In reply to a question, Siraj said, “If I had surrendered and appealed to the Supreme Court, I would have been sent to jail…My family–my wife and two minor daughters–in the city’s Gendaria depends on me, so I had to continue my illegal practice.”
When contacted, Dhaka Bar Secretary Gazi Mohammad Shah Alam told The Daily Star that as acquiring a certificate to become a lawyer does not need police verification, it gives criminals like Siraj scopes to be lawyers.
To be a member of a bar, it only needs an affidavit that the membership seeker has no affiliation to other profession, he added.
Siraj took both the chances and became a lawyer and a member of the bar, Shah Alam said, adding that he would take steps to cancel Siraj’s membership.

মানুষ কেন লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করে না?
এতক্ষণের কথা শুনে আপনি প্রশ্ন তুলতে পারেন: লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করলেই মানুষ যদি তা অর্জন করতে পারে তাহলে তাবৎ মানুষ লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করে না কেন – বিশেষ করে সময়াবদ্ধ, পরিমাপযোগ্য লক্ষ্য লিখে রাখে না কেন? এটি জীবনের এক বিশাল রহস্য। আমার বিশ্বাস চারটি কারণে মানুষ এটি করে না।
- লক্ষ্যকে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মনে করে না: প্রথমত, বেশিরভাগ মানুষই লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণের গুরুত্ব অনুধাবন করে না। আপনি যদি এমন পরিবেশে বেড়ে ওঠেন যেখানে কেউ লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করে না কিংবা এটি নিয়ে আলোচনা করে না তাহলে এটির গুরুত্ব সম্পর্কে অনবধানতা গড়ে উঠতেই পারে। আপনি যদি লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ কখনও না দেখেন তাহলে তার সাফল্যও দেখতে পাবেন না। এটি আপনাকে লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করা হতে বিরত রাখবে। আপনার চারপাশে তাকিয়ে দেখুন কয়জন পরিষ্কারভাবে লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করে? তাদের কেউ কেউ যদি সুস্পষ্ট লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করত এবং তার ফল যদি আপনি দেখতে পেতেন তাহলে আপনি কি লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণে আগ্রহী হতেন না?
- তারা জানে না কীভাবে লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করতে হয়: মানুষ লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ না করার দ্বিতীয় কারণ হলো তারা জানে না কীভাবে লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করতে হয়। আরো বড় ব্যাপার হলো এই যে মানুষ মনে করে তাদের সত্যিই কিছু লক্ষ্য আছে। আসলে তাদের যা আছে তাহলো কিছু স্বপ্ন ও ইচ্ছা – যেমন সুখী হবো কিংবা অনেক টাকা কামাবো জাতীয় ইচ্ছা। কিন্তু এগুলি আসলে লক্ষ্য নয়। এগুলি আসলে আমাদের মনের ইচ্ছেপাখি – যা সবারই থাকে। লক্ষ্য সাধারণ ইচ্ছা বা আকাঙ্ক্ষা হতে ভিন্ন। এটি স্পষ্ট, লিখিত, এবং সুনির্ধারিত। এটি খুব দ্রুত ও সহজেই অন্যের নিকট ব্যাখা করা সম্ভব। আপনি এটি মাপতে পারবেন, এবং জানতে পারবেন আপনি কখন এটি অর্জন করেছেন, কিংবা করেন নি।
লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ সম্পর্কে একবিন্দু না জেনেও বিশ্বের প্রখ্যাত বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে সর্বোচ্চ ডিগ্রী অর্জন করা সম্ভব। কারণ শিক্ষাব্যবস্থার পরিকল্পনায় যারা থাকেন তাদের মধ্যেও লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণের গুরুত্ব সম্পর্কে ধারণা নেই। আর সে কারণেই তারা এটিকে শিক্ষা ব্যবস্থার মধ্যে যোগ করতে উদ্যোগী হন নি। তবে আপনি যদি স্বউদ্যোগে এটি শেখেন তাহলে আপনার সারা জীবনের সহায় হবে এই বিদ্যা। - ব্যর্থতার ভয় : লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ না করার তৃতীয় কারণ হলো মানুষ ভয় পায় যে তারা এটি অর্জন করতে পারবে না। ব্যর্থতা মানুষকে আঘাত করে। এটি মানসিকভাবে এবং আর্থিকভাবে মানুষকে দুর্বল করে দেয়। তাই মানুষ সতর্ক হয়ে যায় পরেরবার ব্যর্থতা এড়ানোর জন্য। এটি করতে গিয়ে অবচেতনেই মানুষ ঝুঁকি এড়িয়ে চলতে অভ্যস্ত হয়ে পড়ে। তাই সেই আঘাত না পাওয়ার ভয়ে আগেই লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ হতে বিরত থাকে। তাদের আশঙ্কা থাকে কোনো লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণের পর সেটি অর্জন করতে না পারলে তা নিজেদের জন্য ক্ষতিকর হবে। বিশেষ করে তা মানসিক কষ্টের কারণ হবে। সেজন্য একদম লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ বাদ দিয়ে দেন এসব মানুষ।
- প্রত্যাখ্যানের ভয়: লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ না করার চতুর্থ কারণ হলো মানুষ প্রত্যাখ্যানের ভয় পায়। মানুষ মনে করে কোনো লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণের পরে সেটি অর্জন করতে না পারলে অন্যরা সেটি নিয়ে তাকে বিদ্রুপ কিংবা সমালোচনা করবে। মনে হয় এ কারণেই বেশিরভাগ মানুষ লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণ করে না, আর করলেও তা অন্যদের কোনোক্রমেই জানতে দিতে চায় না। আপনিও লক্ষ্য নির্ধারণের সময় এরকম ভয় পেলে কাউকে জানানোর দরকার নেই। আপনার পরিকল্পনা গোপন রাখুন, এবং সাফল্যের পরই তা সবাইকে জানান। এভাবেই আপনি প্রত্যাখ্যানের ভয়কে জয় করতে পারবেন।

New theme for my blog: p2
I am free this evening, not much pressure for writing. So I tried to change theme of my blog. I found p2 theme interesting as it looks like twitter ot facebook. You can simply type your status or post from the front-end. The post-layout is also good looking. Now the site looks like the following:

One problem occurred with xilli-lang plugin. On the header, it showed error mesage no theme domain in index.php . I tried to find some solution at Xillisoft, but in vein. Then from some discussion on the forum, I added define('THEME_TEXTDOMAIN','p2'); in index.php page in p2 theme. And that works without any fuss!
